2018 FEB 25 – Romans 1:18

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. (ESV)

Today, I worshipped at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. it is on historic Route 66 and not far from downtown. From outside, it looks like a church built almost 100 years ago. As it turns out, they have been gathering here to worship for 125 years! That is a long time.

When I visit a church, I get a feel for the church family and those that make the place holy. For we can all worship God alone, but a church, well, that is a community worship that can welcome or detour. The feel of the worship and even baptism is that this is an older congregation that is working on making it family friendly for the next generation. I was glad I stopped in and worshipped here.

The pastor made a reference to Texas Hold’em when a player that has a boatload of chips in front of him and then goes all-in. It was in support of the story in Mark 8 where Jesus foretold his death and resurrection. Verse 34 is where he when he gives us the option to deny ourselves and pick up our cross and follow Him. Funny how quick we can go all-in with chips but not with our souls. I am guilty of it as well.

This is the hymn we sang after the sermon, Take Up Thy Cross.

1 Take up your cross, the Savior said,
if you would my disciple be;
take up your cross with willing heart,
and humbly follow after me.

2 Take up your cross; let not its weight
fill your weak spirit with alarm;
Christ’s strength shall bear your spirit up
and brace your heart and nerve your arm.

I believe worship comes in different shapes and sizes and the important thing is that we worship.
